Race Report

Back at Dirt Devils again! Well, we're getting better! When we left here a few weeks ago we though we had the answer to our problems. We came back with a few set up changes and some new tires. The plan was to take the cross weight and left side weight down a bit and try to get the kart to bite a little bit more in the center of the turns. We spread the rear track out almost an inch and put on brand new tires but we were still way loose in the center of the turn and I just couldn't get the forward bite that I used to get. Even though we were only a few 10ths off the faster kart's times, they really beat me off the turns.

There is not really much to tell you about qualifying except that we didn't overfill the tank or anything like that. The karts were both a little too loose and we qualified about 2 tenths of a second off the pole in all 4 classes attaining 3 - 3rd place spots and one 4th.

In the first race I had motor problems. We pulled a motor out that we hadn't run since December and didn't do anything to it other than change the oil. I got a good start and was running in 3rd and staying with the leaders when the motor just quit. I watched the last 14 laps of the race from the infield and finished 17th. I guess the diaphram in the carb was bad.

The second race was pretty uneventful other than that I couldn't get off the turns very well and lost 2 positions finishing in 5th.

In the 3rd race things got worse. By now the sun had set and the track was getting a little slick. I was struggling even more to get off the corners and I think we went out on too little air. I dropped all the way back to 8th but on the last lap 2 karts in front of me got together and spun in turn 4 so I went past them to finish 6th.

The 4th race was pretty much like the second. I wasn't all that bad but I wasn't good enough to advance. I lost one position and dropped back to 4th where I finished the race.

I keep telling myself that I am really going to be glad we have these karts when summer comes and the tracks get tighter and tighter. Still, these races are important so I am going to have to dig my way back out of this hole I'm in to finish well in the points.

After the race was over we found out that the next race that we had scheduled had been moved to no place other than Dirt Devils! So, next week we will, once again, be back at this track. My crew chief was grumbling about stagger on the way home so I guess he's got a few more ideas for the next time around. Check back next week and see if he's right!
