I just love Crossroads! What a great track. As usual, the track was excellent, the hospitality terrific, and the racing was the best.
We got to the track at 5:00 PM Friday night and went out to practice and help work in the track. The track seemed to be coming in just as it had when we were here last fall. Our times were a little bit faster and everything was working fine so we locked up the trailer a little early and headed to the hotel to get some sleep.
Saturday morning was cool and crisp and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The WKA Officials were right on top of everything and practice started on time. When qualifying time came the track was not quite as fast as it had been in the past. My crew chief got a little mixed up (what else is new!) and set my kart up for heavy instead of light. Still, we qualified 5th which is fine with me. Then we took off some weight and dropped the gear down a little and went out and quaffed 5th in heavy too.
When it was time to race I was ready. In heavy I got a good start and stayed right with the pack. Then on lap 5 there was a big wreck where one of the drivers flipped his kart 2 times sideways. That was scary, but it turned out he was OK. Praise GOD! Well, we started up again and I raced the best I could but I just wasn't as fast as I needed to be so I wound up 3rd.
Then we went out for light and again I got a good start. I raced up to third but like before I just wasn't as fast as the leaders. I slowly dropped back and wound up finishing in 6th.
My crew chief says that it seems that you can't give the track too much gear and it's harder to know when you are on the right gear than other tracks. We got a few ideas to make the kart go faster and we're coming back for the Nationals in 2 weeks. See yaa there!
